"Hey, Kids!" Yeah, Suzy is coming to town and in a big way. Me? Watching the Die Hard movies, making a Tuscan white bean soup with a fever, and working on the novel. Or maybe go out in it? Who knows, but loving that the first snowfall is going to be full force.
Mix one part B-52's (indeed that is Mister Fred Schneider on vocals), two parts Daniel Nardicio party, and fold in red and green candy cherries and you get Fruitcake, the music video. The most maligned of holiday desserts is worse in name than reality. The key is to respect the product's density and serve appropriately. If it has gone too dry and dense, just set the cake in a sautee pan with brandy and orange zest. Heat until the booze is simmering, poke holes in the cake and pour the booze into the holes. Let it sit for five minutes and you (actually) have an awesome holiday treat.
Do you have very traditional Thanksgiving guests that you want to give a jolt? Consider then this "cake" that includes everything, including turkey (meatloaf), cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes (topped with marshmallows). It's actually rather simple to make.

The recipes of Martha Rose Shulman in the Times are always a pleasure. They're never too complex and always healthy. Granted, modifications can be made to make them less healthy (and more complex). On a recent rainy night, her Garlic Soup was made. Following Shulman's recipe (but doubling it) was very easy, but we wanted something heartier so extra fusilli was added and some shrimp was sauteed with garlic.
Served with a simple kale salad (with cranberries and walnuts), it was a perfect rainy day meal. (As I'm typing, the sun is coming out, but still, it's a great soup!
