Congratulations, It's a Girl (self-portrait) 2009 24" x 36"
Rachael has been living in Brooklyn since 1996, coming to New York and obtaining her BFA at Pratt after growing up in the Pacific Northwest. From her own words:
I make paintings that celebrate boldness and personal strength in the
face of cultural constraints. These portraits illustrate through
concept and craft, the dynamism of identity-driven, social and visual
contradiction.
As a reflection of the subject, I attempt to demonstrate these
concepts through a set of often contradictory yet harmonious visual
elements. Subtle textures are held within and against graphic shape.
Highly refined elements are set against what is loose and gestural, as
muted colors reveal the bold.
By deliberately fusing these diverse elements into what is a balanced
and iconic composition, I wish to represent the diversity, beauty and
an unapologetic sense of self in the subject.
