Word of the Day: Dilettante

In keeping with our general advocacy of saying what you mean and meaning what you say here at FYF, and as there's a proven direct correlation between the size of your vocabulary and both your ability to more precisely convey your message AND the potential to leave your listeners in the dust (particularly in this day and age?) should they not possess the same size vocabulary, we proudly present a series of "Word[s] of the Day" posts.

Our first word, then:

dil·et·tante/ˌdiliˈtänt/

Noun:

A person who claims an area of interest, such as the arts, without real commitment or knowledge. A person with an amateur interest in the arts.

We're throwing a giant music festival Labor Day Weekend in L.A.

Psyche.

(But step off our name fo' real, yo? M'k??)

No, the real news is:

a) Rod is taking a sabbatical for the month of July.

Writing this shit may not seem like much, but doing it while holding down a full-time job AND being a full-time gay (or homosexual? queer? What are we? Are we not men? We are Devo!) is MUCH!

So Rod is making a complete break from blogging for an entire month.

Me on the other hand?

b) I'm gonna see how it goes while posting less frequently/more thoughtfully (hopefully). The mini-posts with which we've become habituated to filling a day aren't given much time to percolate and ferment before we throw them up and push them out onto the stage, and I tend to be someone who writes about something by which I'm compelled, as opposed to something that just catches my eye like a glittery donut (notable exception: FYF After Dark posts).

So what does this mean for you, loyal reader? It means more time to get outdoors, commune with nature and your fellow man. Less time spent poring over (as I'm sure all of you spend much time doing) our incisive, compelling, and absorbing posts will mean more time expressing all the spunk, individuality, charisma and charm (take that, RuPaul!) with which you are imbued.

And for that, we can all be thankful.

This Is FYF fully endorses Summer Fridays.  As such, we'll be in easy, breezy Tumblresque mode on Fridays throughout the summer.  Hugs, Rod & Duane

It's not your eyes that are wrong, we did increase the font size.  Courier doesn't do well on mobile devices, so we're experimenting.  Maybe we'll go back to Georgia (the font, not the state).

FYF Calendar: It's "The City That Never Sleeps", but the party's usually over by 4 (AM)

So we've been tweaking the FYF Calendar and the "This Weekend" features a bit here on FYF the past couple of weeks and one thing I noticed was that having the events entered with the correct times they ran (e.g.: from 11pm - 4am) meant they showed up again at the beginning of the following day, confusing matters when presented as they are in the Calendar as shown above.

Take the Booty Call Wednesdays listing above: Booty Call runs from 9pm (Pacific Time) to 2am, so - though Booty Call begins on Wednesday, September 15th, it ends Thursday morning, September 16th. Therefore, to clean things up a bit, I'm performing some "magic" behind the scenes so that each event only appears once (unless it's a series). 

Just know that - despite what the "When" for an event on the FYF Calendar says, it should be assumed (unless spelled out in the description for that event) the party ends at 4am when New York City bars close.

Speaking of confusing...I mean something to look forward to...Tai and I will be hosting this weekend's second SPRocket Outdoor Dance/BBQ at an undisclosed location (RSVP here to receive location and directions.) from 2 - 1opm. It kind of serves as the opening salvo in the onslaught that is my birthday month. More than that, though, it's a chance to get freaky, creative, mellow, bold, hynoptized and jazzercised and Lord knows we could all use more of that, New Yorkers.

Yes, Provincetown, and yes, I know Bear Week was last week.

Provincetown is calling me.  A house in the East End, not far from Commercial and Bradford's intersection and right on the water, already has my friends.  My work (the real money work) was too much to take a full week at the moment.  But yes, this hiatus is needed in the worst of ways, so no working, no blogging - just an exercise in relaxing.

Now about this time of year, Mister Andrew Sullivan tends to write a paean about Provincetown that is also about bears and Bear Week.  (Ah, yes.  There it is.  He could have at least credited Marc Johns (whose art we've also used).  Oh, Sully.)  Tons of our friends go to Bear Week, and they have a great time and more power to them.  The 'bear' thing is cute, but it's not for me.

 

Posting this week has been limited.  Due to the drain on the power grid from all the air conditioners and central air units, we've chosen to limit posts, thus reducing the strain on the energy infrastructure.   As it is cooler today, we will get back into the swing of things.

One of your editors is in Madrid dancing around in a Speedo. The other is in a cabin off the Delaware River, also very likely dancing around in a Speedo.  We'll be taking a hiatus from now until July 6 (although there will be some pre-planned posts).

There won't be any.  

Our mission statement is that we write about things we love, and we're pretty much ambivalent on the Oscars, including the red carpet "fashions".  So, yeah.  No Oscar coverage, but we will be giving you lots of activities to do instead of the Oscars on our calendar, so stay tuned!
