Have you read Just Kids?  It's been my holiday read, but I'm only on page 130 or so because of assorted distractions.  The tale is lovely and florid with precise prose that just puts you there in the room with these two amazing people finding their way in a Manhattan of another time.  It's a reintroduction to a time of legends, written from street-level.   While not the type to go for the autograph, I would like to hear her accounts first-hand.  (Side question:  do people with Kindles and Nooks and iPads get those signed or something?  Another reason to keep buying books!)

Going out tonight?

For those of you going out for more tonight on this extended holiday weekend, we salute you. There are lots of things to do, but maybe a trip to Westside Tavern for the Third Annual New Year's Day Potluck and DeeJay Showcase would be in order? And since you're in the neighborhood, stop into The Eagle as all you survivors can enjoy the beer blastings of Mister Paul Ferrer. Then skip (literally as it's good skipping weather out) down to Vandam for basemental shenanigans with Mister Michael Magnon. And do head upstairs to see what Susanne Barsch is wearing (since you can't always ready her amazing fashion diary in the Times every week). Or just go all the way east to Nowhere where the long running Beetlejuice carries tonight.

But seriously, Happy New Year. Let's get to the gym.

There's stuff happening this weekend. Some you might find fun.

Get IN! as I briefly throw events at you that I will - in all likelihood - not be attending because...well...I'm a total misanthrope these days. I hope you can forgive me.

1) For anyone who hates the idea (because I've never been and thus have no basis for my hatred) of Toys for Tots as much as I do, or else for those who don't necessarily hate it, but who aren't friends with whomever bought all the tickets to it the first second they were available, there's this alternative. It kind of sounds cute.

2) The Awl is a major blog and is having a holiday party tonight at...wait for it...Flaming Saddles! It's from 6-9pm and is a bit outlaw (how a propos!) so get there earlyish. Just for fun, here's a walk down FYF's Flaming Saddles memory lane (What's that stench!?)... Post 1 & Post 2.

Just in! Flaming Saddles is holding Open Auditions for dancing bartenders on Tuesday, December 13 at noon! 

3) Spank! is celebrating its 4th birthday tomorrow night at 12-turn-13 in Ft. Greene. Our favorite Spanish artist émigré, Bubi Canal is doing something in a tee-pee in the exhibition space (other artists are involved as well - within THEIR tee-pees.) for the occasion and our favorite sequined platform boot-wearing host, Alberto Cortes will join several other favorites (including resident DJs Will Automagic and Sean B.) in celebrating four years (hard to believe that's it?!) of Spank!!

And there's more! (Particularly if you are in Miami for Art Basel. To you I say, "Good luck!") Don't forget to check the FYF Calendar for complete listings. After all, it is "for you"!

It's Gay Christmas next Monday and, as Christians are wont to do with "the real" Christmas, we (gays) are viewing the fact it's on Monday as a chance to celebrate (if we choose to join this year, which I wasn't!!...and now am?! ...But that's another story.)  ALL WEEKEND.

What to do, you ask? Happy to help! Here's some options:

1. Go to a concert!
   
   For CMJ having been last week, this weekend's line-up of bands is pretty snatch! The Pixies, Danzig and The Misfits? Christmas (gay or straight!) for us 80s-genarians! Add appearances by Spank Rock and The Black Lips and I have to believe someone's really in our heads. Let's reverse that, shall we?


2. Drink some vodka on us!
   
   Not literally on us, but "on us" (Note the space, making that two words.) in the sense that it's gratis. And it is! FYF is hosting the vodka open bar at Pussy Faggot! at The Delancey on Thursday night from 9 to 10 pm. That's how long the open bar goes, I mean. The party itself goes from 8 pm to 4 am and is a parade of one performance by a crazy, wacked-out, amazing downtown denizen/artist/performer after the other. Check the event page for the complete run-down, but Pussy Faggot! is a big artistic/autistic/auteuristic/voyeuristic situation thrown regularly by Earl Dax. Pinay extraordinaire Edwin Ramoran is guest-curating this particular installment.


3. Consult our calendar!
   
   Unsurprisingly, there's slew of events to choose from (It's a "holiday!"). Here's just a taste: there's a Xanadude, a MasquerAID where you can help raise money for a good cause AND celebrate The (Patrick) Christ's birth, and - for you circuit queens - I'll be hosting Peter Rauhofer's WORK!/Freakshow! by some strange twist of events. Awkwardly, those are all on Saturday night, as are a Cheryl (Cherylween), a Double Fanged Disco and - not surprisingly (again!) - a Mister Saturday Night... Sunday? More! Monday? EVEN MORE! I just hope your costume(s)'s durable. And stain-resistant.

This weekend, take a mustache ride!

Okay, so there is an event Sunday at Public Assembly called the Brokedown Throwdown and, well, I'll be out of town so I really haven't done much research.  What I do know is that there will be something called the Mustache Ride and that it looks super fun (or at least sounds super fun).  Based on the concept art above all I can possibly do is endorse this Mustache Ride and hope that you can take a ride on this moustache or something similar. 

If you want to meet men that like books and art and art books, then you might want to go to the NY Art Book Fair at P.S. 1 this weekend.  You will find art and books and art books and men that like them. 

PRIDE 2011: BLOWOFF - Friday night at Highline Ballroom.

My friend, Amir, is really looking forward to this. He's never been and is in need of escort. He is smart, as can be evidenced by the following exchange between he and his boss:

Amir: "In Tel Aviv, if you see someone who's on steroids, you know he's gay. Here everyone is!" 

Boss: "Gay or on steroids?"

Amir: "Both!"

Besides being a quick study (he just moved here!), he's attractive, gainfully employed and single. He appreciates - very generally and non-offensively - an aesthetic in keeping with that being sold by the Bear/Not Bear guy.

The schedule's FILLED! Events OUT THE WAZOO (And in. And out. This IS Pride after all?!)! Tourists and trannies and thongs, oh my! Tellingly(?) Rod and I are both out of pocket this weekend. And yet, we're VERY proud, so...not sure what that fact tells.

This weekend: Geminis must be twins or how else could there be so many!?

Birthdays, birthdays, BIRTHdays are what's happening, people! That's all this weekend seems to be scheduled with! I sound like I'm grousing, but - truth be told - happy birthday all you geminis! Especially my sister Tai Chi and other FYF loves: Solomon Greene, Eldin Johnston, Brian Toynes, Jason Anthony, Bill Pfeiffer and every other Gemini having their birthday party THE SAME FUCKING DAY (Saturday, in case you were wondering.)! Big love, duos! Being with you always feels like a threesome! And yes, each of those links are to an event page for their respective parties.

Tai's party will be in Central Park's Sheep Meadow like last year and promises to be a relaxing, fun-filled time (primarily because I'm in charge. See?). Meanwhile down at the docks, sorry...piers, Jason Anthony is - true to his twinned sign - pulling double-duty by hosting a good-hearted flash mob/love-in prior to his birthday lounge-on-the-grass that afternoon. Bring a song, a white t-shirt and a heart filled with love, 'k?

Tonight, as another Gemini enters his 30s (Happy Birthday Greg Lockard!), Viva Ruiz and Gavin Russom perform together as The Crystal Ark at Sugarhill Disco in Brooklyn for what promises to be a MAJOR night of music and performance. Also, Alberto Cortes makes music with his body.

There's also Clubber Down Disco (It's Honey's birthday, too!), a SPANK boatride and Mister Saturday Night tomorrow night and Folsom Street East Sunday, (just naming a few) so there's plenty to do regardless of how many Gemini's you know. Naked Bike Ride this weekend.

Doesn't it feel great to go for a bike ride?  And doesn't it feel great to get naked?  Combine the two this weekend with Naked Bike Ride, part of a world-wide event protesting the indecency of oil dependence and the decency of being naked.  The route is a secret (because our police force hates bikes and nakedness), but it starts out at 3pm in Williamsburg (99 South Sixth Street off Bedford Avenue) with a bike and body decorating party.

Manhattanhenge in full effect tonight.

We're in that rare set of days where the grid system of Manhattan aligns with the sun at sunset to show the sun directly down the avenues.  Tonight after 8 the streets will be flooded with the ambient glow of sunset.  The above is from the vantage of Hunter's Point in Long Island City.  (More from past years are here.)

World's richest, arguably most-powerful woman stops footing bill for celebrities' trips to Chicago.

In other, more interesting to this non-watcher news (though I will concede she's turned the talk show business on its head...she's sort of the Wal-Mart of talk shows, if you will? Like Wal-Mart, she offers a quality product for the most part, but she's killed all competition. Unlike Wal-Mart, however, that's not such a bad thing in her case.) Brian Rafferty and Shawn Paul Mazur have undertaken the task of reviving the supper club tradition by hosting a complete evening of dining and entertainment on the far west side at - fittingly enough - Juliet Supper Club. Their evening (tonight, actually) is humbly named KINGS and includes an after-work drinks/dinner portion from 7 to 9pm, and then a party portion from 9 to far-too-late-for-this-working-girl.

I believe the picture above depicts the dessert course.

In other equally-more-exciting-than-the-end-of-Oprah-before-the-beginning-of-the-new-more-monopolistic-Oprah news, DJs Rich King and Michael T. are spinning tonight as guests for Mandy Graves and Jools Palmer's BASSMENT at Kings Cross on the Bowery (next to Bowery Bar, in the former The Slide space.).

This busy busy holiday weekend, both BASSMENT guests will be hosting/spinning big parties - Rich out in Fire Island for SUMMERSNAXX BY THE SEA on Saturday night, and Mr. T. at OH! YOU PRETTY THINGS: THE NEW ROMANTICS at Le Poisson Rouge on Sunday night...a party I'll also be hosting, FYF style (whatever that means). Despite it being a New Romantics party, Nowhere's River and I are tasked with hosting a Bear Lounge and we have been asked to deliver bears giving LOOKS, so...you've got your work cut out for you, hirsute brutes! Or else you've got your hair to cut...whichever?

Special note: Were you to decide you'd like to visit Mr. T. and Mr. King at BASSMENT tonight, you'd be in the East Village already and thereby have an ostensibly easier time rolling to nearby fun at GOOD TIMES with Josh Sparber at Eastern Bloc, and also COCK & SOUL (with Mona Foot and Gant Johnson and friends paying tribute to Bjork) at The Cock.

Also this Memorial Day weekend, Ladyfag adds a new Saturday party to her existing Friday night (CLUBBER DOWN DISCO) roster with WAHWEE at Drom (formerly known as Opaline?) on A and 6th (downstairs).

Remember Sunday Best at BKLYN Yard? Well it's - for all intents and purposes - back in the form of MISTER SUNDAY at the same location starting this Sunday. It's 1) near my house, 2) A bucolic and beautiful setting in an enclosed sort of farmyard on the Gowanus Canal (far enough away to avoid contamination!) and 3) pretty fucking amazing as far as outdoor dance parties (or any dance party, really?) go. Most of all for this opening day, though? Four Tet will guest DJ alongside residents Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter. Yay!

Important! Alejandro Jodorowsky's "The Holy Mountain" is screening at MoMA PS1

   

The Holy Mountain, an Alejandro Jodorowsky film from 1973, is screening at MoMA PS1 from May 22 - June 30, 2011.

The following comments on The Holy Mountain trailer (above) allude to misgivings many experience with regards to Jodorowsky's surreal, visually arresting films. If you are unable to find anything you like about his films, please talk to me as I would like to understand you and your tastes better.

Though May is almost half over, we're only now mentioning May is Masturbation Month. How we (I!) overlooked this is unfathomable. To make up for it, I'm considering doubling my daily "observation" of this (to my mind) all-too-important visibility campaign. I may need some inspiration/assistance, should I decide to seek penance in this way. What say you? Sound like a good idea? Want to help? Let me know.

Meanwhile, apparently Bernadette Peters supports the "cause" (She sings the "Masturbators' National Anthem"!?) but more compelling to me than that (FAR more compelling?!) is the fact that Masturbation Month has traditionally involved Masturbate-a-thons which sound wildly exciting to me for some reason!? Keep in mind I was a virgin (no sex, whatsoever) until 27, so I may be a bit biased/dysfunctional on the onanistic tip, but still...

I'm betting the reality is not quite what I'm fantasizing, but the memory of Manny Torres walking out on stage at a SExpo at Webster Hall several years ago and unexpectedly - and quite quickly! - tossing off a load as his "intro" to the crowd is still seared onto my mind to this day. Words kind of fail here. 

Unfortunately, there isn't a Masturbate-a-thon planned for 2011 so far (at least not an "official" one. In a venue. With many participants together.) but, regardless, here's to rubbing one out shamelessly!

This weekend, things get kray-kray...

It's finally warm and the weekend forecast promises sun, so there's bound to be some spring fever situations experienced by one and all. Aside from that? There's a shitload of stuff we here at FYF are pimping/doing/loving.

First, tonight My Spring Fling Turned Into My Summer Dream opens at splatterpool artspace in Greenpoint. Curated by J. Morrison, the show presents paired (but not necessarily coupled) pieces from many artists we consider FYF Friends (and hope they do, too!) including Geoff Chadsey, Erik Hanson, Richard Haines, Paul Mpagi Sepaya, Brian Kenny and Slava Mogutin. The show is meant to play "off the dualities of the seasons (Sexy Spring to Summer Fuck)" to which we say, I'll have both!

Later is Clubber Down Disco at the Chelsea Hotel of course...and then tomorrow I am the fortunate last-minute addition to WE HAVE COME TO TAKE YOUR JOBS, a special Saturday Sessions at PS1 curated by the one and only Viva Ruiz and featuring the premier of her telenovela, IMMIGRANTULA, as well as a live performance of their newest single by her and Desi Santiago's art house music project, Escandalo (this is the bit of which I'll be a part). You won't necessarily know it's me, but I'll be beating some sticks, for real yo. Admission is free with museum admission, but space is limited so PS1 is recommending getting there early for a wristband to get in for the performance. You should 'cuz I'm planning to be devastating.

Later that night, I'm guest-hosting the latest edition of XANADUDE at the Public Assembly Loft in Williamsburg. Always a good vibe and a great mix of people, plus good tunes with DJ Will Automagic and a force of nature from England, Dan Beaumont guesting along side residents Sean B. and Deputy. Come! It'll be MAGIC, no doubt!

Then Sunday, Mark Furlong is feted on the occasion of his going away (he's moving to Germany) at a soiree/tea dance in the basement at The Monster. You know how Mark lives for his DJs and a slew of them are pumping through to keep your feet moving all night, including MICHAEL T, CHAUNCEY D, JUSTIN CARTER, MANDY GRAVES, JOOLS PALMER, RYAN SMITH, GUSTAVO MOTTA and RICH KING. A little later, that whole MAY DAY thing that we've been pimping all week via posts and the banner ad right over here --> (it's at the top) happens with BIMBO JONES and Freemasons at Amnesia NYC (which, for the LIFE of me, I can't place as the former Ruby Falls!? Or rather, I can't place a Ruby Falls? Guess I skipped that segment of Chelsea night life history.).
