There are generally two schools of thought regarding brilliance. Some prefer its arrival via a "flash"; a welcome happenstance; an epiphany. Others may start there, but achieve their goals of superior aesthetic appeal and heightened intellectual "wow!" factor through constant revision and tweaks.
Mac Folkes belongs firmly to the second school, as can be evidenced by the newly released print edition of The Slant that is the result of a lengthy gestation. This is not to say that there was anything subpar about The Slant from the moment of its inception! No! Rather - as Mac would say - "Things can always be better."
He has nearly disproved himself, but regardless - if you want to see ravishing? - pick up a copy of The Slant, exclusively available from Dashwood Books (33 Bond Street between Lafayette and Bowery - (212) 387-8520), printed in a series of 2500 and priced at $36. It's something done right, worth having and holding and so beautiful you'll hang it on the wall. And then take it down. And then hang it. And then take it down...etc. Having and holding, honey! Having and holding.
